Artist statement

Liquid research

My Art practice flows in different directions, ripples, surges and submerges, but always starts or ends with water. Every entity on Earth is a body of water, equal to each other. All water on Earth moves between these humans, animals, oceans and rivers as part of a bigger picture.

The sense of connection and security water brings me, has only increased since I started diving. Surrounded by water, I am home and nothing is more important than simply being.

Oceans and seas are my inspiration, my muse and sometimes even my partner.

This love channels a desire to protect vulnerable ecosystems underwater. Part of my installations are objects that refer to structures made by different bodies of water on which corals could grow. Materials such as cement used in coral conservation have flowed into my work, thus blurring the lines between art and science.

"Vriendelijk, maar krachtig begroet hij mij. Langzaam dichterbij komend.

canvas in het zand, netjes recht, precies daar waar ik het wil hebben, precies daar waar hij er nu nog nèt niet bij kan, maar straks zeker wel.
Zijn markeringen in het zand geven mij een voorproefje van wat hij straks voor mij zal doen. Speelse, maar netjes opeenvolgende lijnen.
Lijnen die straks op mijn, nee ons doek zullen verschijnen.
Help je me?
Wil je dat?
“Ja”, lijkt hij te zeggen, als het eerst water rustig over het doek vloeit en hij een deel van de pigmenten voorzichtig met zich meeneemt.

“Ja”, lijkt hij nogmaals te zeggen bij de tweede golf.

“Maar wel op mijn manier...” luidt het bij de derde.

Water stroomt speels over het doek, naast het doek en ook onder het doek. Poeltjes laat hij liggen voor mij, maar pigmenten neemt hij stiekem met zich mee.

Ik draai me om, let even niet op.
Een grotere golf, hij grijpt het doek en sleurt het mee, bijna agressief.
Ik zie het, ren erachteraan, roep: “geef terug!”
speels laat hij het dansen over zijn golven alsof hij zegt “kom maar halen dan!”

Rennend, natte voeten.
Hij is sneller, maar laat het doek voor me liggen.
Omgedraaid, opgerold, zand erover.

Terwijl ik het doek bekijk en voorzichtig opraap denk ik hem te horen zeggen:
“Het hoeft niet zo netjes, zo strak, zo gecontroleerd. Zo ben ik niet. Dat weet je toch?”
Soms moet je niet alle touwtjes in handen willen hebben. Soms moet je je overgeven.
Een mooie realisatie.
Van hem. Of van mij.
Dat weet ik niet."
